1968年にローリング・ストーンズが発表した『ベガーズ・バンケット』(Beggars Banquet)というフレーズを、エミリィ・ディキンソン の1862年の詩句の中に見つけて心底びっくりしました。アメリカでエミリィが''Beggars -Banquets''と書きとめたちょうど百年後に、イギリスでロックバンドが結成されたわけです。私自身は中学生だった1970年からエミリィもストーンズもずっと好きでい続けていますが、両者を結び付ける発想はそもそもありませんでした。ねえ聞いて聞いて、という気持ちです。
