沈む者は三度浮かび上がり　天を仰ぐものと聞いている，

Drowning is not so pitiful

As the attempt to rise

Three times, ’tis said, a sinking man

Comes up to face the skies,

溺れる事自体は哀れでない

浮かび上がりあがくほどは

沈む者は三度浮かび上がり

天を仰ぐものと聞いている

And then declines forever

To that abhorred abode,

Where hope and he part company –

For he is grasped of God. 

それから永久に落ちて行く

あの忌み嫌われた住まいに

希望との結びつきは切れて

神様の手の中に抱かれる

The Maker’s cordial visage,

However good to see,

Is shunned, we must admit it,

Like an adversity.

主の優しい顔を拝むのは

さぞ幸せであろうけれど

忌み嫌われる残念ながら

まるで災厄のように
