Pervaded Her, We thought

Just a Sea – with a Stem –

If the Bird and the Farmer – deem it a “Pine” –

The Opinion will do – for them –

考えるのなら―それでいい―

It has no Port, nor a “Line” – but the Jays –

That split their route to the Sky –

Or a Squirrel, whose giddy Peninsula

May be easier reached – this way –

港もないし，「定期船」もない―

カケスが―空への路を拓く―

リスが，目のくらむ半島に

この路で―容易く到着する―

For Inlands – the Earth is the under side –

And the upper side – is the Sun –

And it’s Commerce – if Commerce it have –

Of Spice – I infer from the Odors borne –

内陸にとって―地球は内側―

頭の上には―太陽が見える―

商売があるなら―香料取引―

運ぶ匂いで―推論できる―

Of it’s Voice – to affirm – when the Wind is within –

Can the Dumb – define the Divine?

The Definition of Melody – is –

That Definition is none –

風が吹いて―声を―確信する―

聾者に―神が定義できるか？

メロディを定義する―なら―

定義がないということ―

It – suggests to our Faith –

They – suggest to our Sight –

When the latter – is put away

I shall meet with Conviction I somewhere met

That Immortality –

メロディは信仰に―訴える―

景色は―我々の目に訴える―

視力が―衰えてしまっても

どこかで永遠に会ったと―

When Skill entreated it – the last –

And when so newly dead –

息を引き取るその際で―

I could not deem it late – to hear

That single – steadfast sigh –

The lips had placed as with a “Please”

Toward Eternity –

遅過ぎるとは―聞こえなかった―

一途で―必死な吐息を耳にして―

「どうか」と言おうとした唇は

永遠に向かい語りかけていた―

It was a Grave – yet bore no Stone –

Enclosed ’twas not – of Rail –

A Consciousness – it’s Acre – And

It held a Human Soul –

それは墓だった―墓石はなく―

柵に―覆われてもいなかった―

意識して見ると―墓と―分かり

人の魂も埋められていた―

Entombed by whom – for what offence –

If Home or foreign – born –

Had I the Curiosity –

‘Twere not appeased of Man –

誰に葬られたか―どんな罪で―

この地方の人か異郷の人―か―

私が好奇心を抱かなければ―

誰にも慰められなかった筈―
